Simulation, Sim to Real - Internship Program

What you will do

• Define and deliver a focused simulation project over a 12-week internship with mentor guidance.
• Develop and improve robotics simulation tools using Python and/or C++.
• Evaluate simulation fidelity across sensor modeling, timing, robot behavior, and environment representation.
• Build tools for scenario execution, log replay, regression testing, metrics, and visualization.
• Create reproducible simulation scenarios from field logs, reconstructed environments, and real-world failure cases.
• Investigate differences between simulated and real robot behavior with simulation and autonomy engineers, then document and present the results.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Programming experience in Python and/or C++.
• Foundational knowledge of robotics, simulation, computer graphics, physics, or software engineering.
• Experience building and debugging software, with familiarity with Git and Linux.
• Interest in how sensing, timing, physics, and environments affect robot behavior.
• Availability for a 12-week, on-site internship in Irvine, California.

Nice to have

• Experience with Isaac Sim, Gazebo, MuJoCo, Unity, Unreal, or another simulation platform.
• Familiarity with ROS2, sensor messages, coordinate transforms, or recorded robot data.
• Experience with URDF, USD, meshes, point clouds, sensor simulation, physics modeling, 3D reconstruction, or procedural environment generation.
• Experience with automated testing, CI workflows, batch simulation, data analysis, or visualization.
• Robotics research, student team, competition, or open-source project experience.
