Staff Software Engineer, Backend Booking Platform & APIs (Ruby on Rails)

Location: Flatiron HQ in New York, NY, four days per week

Annual base salary: $220,000–$240,000, plus equity, based on experience.

What you will do

• Lead architecture and the technical roadmap for the booking domain and external API.
• Model products, pricing, availability, holds, reservations, and category-specific booking rules.
• Build and launch a versioned API covering pricing, availability, holds, bookings, changes, and cancellations.
• Design reliable booking operations with retries, timeouts, idempotency, concurrency controls, webhooks, and reconciliation.
• Establish reusable patterns for supply, property management, and point-of-sale integrations.
• Lead migrations, reliability improvements, observability, rollback planning, design reviews, pairing, and mentoring.

Requirements

• Demonstrated impact leading substantial technical work across multiple engineers or teams.
• Experience designing transactional systems, APIs, or integration platforms used by other teams or companies.
• Strong understanding of relational modeling, concurrency, consistency, asynchronous workflows, and failure handling.
• Experience safely evolving existing production systems and making pragmatic architectural tradeoffs.
• Strong hands-on backend engineering and clear communication with technical and business partners.
• Ability to work from the Flatiron HQ in New York four days per week.

Nice to have

• Ruby on Rails experience.
• Experience with marketplaces, reservations, inventory, payments, or public APIs.
