TL;DR
Senior Entomologist (New World Screwworm): Leading the scientific design and execution of a biobanking program for New World Screwworm populations, including fitness validation, field collection, live-colony rearing, and genetic baseline development with an accent on insect behavioral ecology, developmental biology, and rigorous experimental statistics. Focus on coordinating multi-country outbreak-zone collections, distinguishing cryopreservation effects from biological variation, and delivering protocols, analyses, and regulatory reports for federal and partner stakeholders.

Location: Dallas, TX; on-site residence in Dallas is not required, but availability for travel and field work across Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, and southern Mexico is required.

Company

hirify.global develops scientific and biotechnology programs focused on ecological restoration and genetic resource preservation.

What you will do

  • Lead the New World Screwworm Biobanking Program across fitness validation, biobanking, and embryology production phases.
  • Design and quality-control a nine-trait fitness battery for fresh and cryopreserved screwworm cohorts.
  • Direct field collection operations across Central America and southern Mexico, including sampling, trapping, live-material collection, and cross-border coordination.
  • Oversee live-colony rearing, larval diet preparation, pupation, and eclosion under ACL-3 requirements.
  • Lead statistical analysis, effect-size comparisons, monitoring of population dynamics, and interpretation of generational effects.

  • Experience with insect field sampling, live-colony rearing, controlled environmental conditions, diet formulation, and standardized arthropod surveys.
  • Strong experimental design, applied statistics, effect-size analysis, power analysis, and scientific communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to and work in field settings across Central America and southern Mexico, including active livestock outbreak zones.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Diptera, Calliphoridae, Cochliomyia hominivorax, Sterile Insect Technique, or COPEG operations.
  • Experience with USDA-ARS, USDA-APHIS, biological control, or integrated pest management programs.
  • Familiarity with cryopreservation, insect biobanking, ACL-2/ACL-3 conditions, or USDA-APHIS permitting.
  • Proficiency in R, SAS, or similar statistical software.
  • Spanish proficiency and peer-reviewed publications in entomology or behavioral ecology.

Culture & Benefits

  • This is a six-month contract position with collection trips.
  • Work is distributed across laboratories, test facilities, academic institutions, libraries, and offices.
  • Full-time employees receive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Full-time employee benefits include paid time off, company holidays, FSA, a matched 401(k), paid parental leave, and education reimbursement.
  • Work is conducted in a collaborative, scientific, and interdisciplinary environment focused on ecological restoration.
