Environment Art Lead (Unreal Engine): Building stylized environments, modular architecture, terrain, foliage, materials, lighting, and hero spaces for a co-op open-world game with an accent on hands-on world building, visual direction, and Unreal Engine 5 production. Location: Remote-friendly, with a few hours of daily overlap with US Pacific time

What you will do

  • Create final-quality environment assets and scenes in Unreal Engine 5, including modular architecture, props, terrain, foliage, materials, and lighting.
  • Build stylized game environments from blockout through polish, including biomes, set dressing, and hero spaces for a co-op open-world game.
  • Translate the Game Art Director’s vision into environment art standards and provide specific style guidance and feedback.
  • Collaborate with the Game Art Director, Concept Artists, game leads, production, and external outsourcing or freelance partners.
  • Represent environment art in planning, scope work, identify risks, and make tradeoffs between ambition and delivery.
  • Manage and help grow the Environment Art team, including hiring and onboarding.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience creating environment art for games, including significant end-to-end ownership on at least one shipped title.
  • Portfolio demonstrating stylized environments, strong composition, material read, lighting, in-engine work, and breakdowns.
  • Deep Unreal Engine experience covering level building, the Material Editor, Lumen and Nanite-era lighting, performance, and frame-budget considerations.
  • Strong proficiency with industry-standard 2D or 3D tools such as Photoshop, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Maya, Blender, or 3DS Max.
  • Experience with modular kit building and trim-sheet workflows, plus excellent communication, mentorship, and collaboration skills.
  • Comfort working remotely and asynchronously across time zones with a few hours of daily overlap with US Pacific time.

Nice to have

  • Small-team experience involving multiple responsibilities and independent scope decisions.
  • Interest in generative AI, industry trends, and techniques that improve environment art quality or production efficiency.
