Cost Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Hybrid in Warren, Michigan; 3 days in the office and 2 days remote. Must be able to report to the local office.

What you will do

• Develop and continuously improve cost knowledge, cost models, and activity-based costing tools for materials, vendor tooling, engineering, development, and design.
• Prepare should-cost estimates for assigned automotive components and subsystems while assessing GM and competitor design solutions.
• Provide cost insights for vehicle program business cases, target costs, profitability improvement, and sourcing decisions.
• Compare supplier quotes with estimated costs and support Purchasing in data-driven negotiations with international Tier 1 automotive suppliers.
• Identify and support savings opportunities through design-to-cost, VAVE, cost optimization, benchmarking, and commercial gap resolution.
• Collaborate with Purchasing and Engineering, develop estimating standards, and train new Cost Engineers on costing methods and GM tools.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, or a related field.
• Three years of experience as a Cost Engineer, Launch Engineer, Product Engineer, or in a related role.
• Three years of experience with activity-based costing, including material piece cost, ED&D, and vendor tooling.
• Manufacturing process experience covering injection molding, stamping, brazing, aluminum extrusion, SMT/electronics, casting, machining, and high-volume general assembly.
• Experience with automotive components, Tier 1 supplier quote analysis, commercial negotiations, design-to-cost/VAVE, cost optimization, benchmarking, data analytics, and costing software.
• Ability to demonstrate command of costing tools and train other people.
