AI Research Scientist

Location: Hybrid, based out of the San Francisco or New York City hub. Listed locations include San Francisco, New York City, and Seattle.

Base compensation: $199K–$325K annually, plus equity.

Writer develops an end-to-end enterprise AI platform with AI agents and enterprise-grade large language models that help companies deploy AI-powered work at scale.

What you will do

• Lead an independent research agenda covering large language models, agentic systems, reasoning, planning, and tool use.
• Design and run large-scale post-training experiments using SFT, RLHF, RLAIF, DPO, GRPO, and related alignment techniques.
• Create evaluation benchmarks and methodologies for complex real-world enterprise tasks.
• Build scalable data synthesis, curation, LLM-as-judge, synthetic data, and adversarial dataset pipelines.
• Translate research findings into improvements to model architecture, training roadmaps, and production deployments.
• Publish original research, represent Writer at leading conferences, and mentor researchers and engineers.

Requirements

• 7+ years of hands-on machine learning research experience, including large language model pre-training and post-training.
• Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, NLP, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated research experience.
• Expertise in SFT, RLHF, RLAIF, DPO, GRPO, and related alignment and reasoning methods.
• Strong Python and PyTorch or JAX skills, with experience building training, evaluation, and data synthesis infrastructure.
• Publication record at competitive ML and AI venues such as NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, ACL, or EMNLP.
• Hands-on experience designing or evaluating agentic systems that plan, reason, use tools, and recover from errors.

• Experience shaping enterprise-grade model architecture and training roadmaps.
• Experience presenting research at leading machine learning and natural language processing conferences.
