Senior Staff Data Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States. Residence is required in a state where the relevant Airbnb entity has a registered entity. Approved remote states include Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. Occasional office or offsite attendance may be required by agreement with the manager.

Base pay range: $248,000–$310,000 USD annually, with possible bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.

What you will do

• Set the long-term data strategy and architecture for foundational data assets across cloud cost, traffic and bot measurement, and infrastructure intelligence.
• Design and build Airflow-orchestrated pipelines ingesting telemetry, logs, billing data, GPU data, and model data.
• Develop dimensional models and Minerva definitions used by technical, finance, and executive stakeholders.
• Define how Airbnb measures AI training and serving economics, GPU utilization, model performance, and developer AI-tool adoption.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture, design reviews, code reviews, automated quality frameworks, and coaching without direct reports.
• Resolve conflicting requirements across Infrastructure, Finance, Data Science, and Product Engineering, and participate in on-call support.

Requirements

• 12+ years of relevant industry experience with a BS or Master's degree, or 9+ years with a PhD, in data engineering or a related field.
• Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale production data pipelines.
• Strong SQL and Python skills; Scala experience is useful but not required.
• Ability to design dimensional models and define trusted metrics.
• Experience setting technical direction, writing multi-year strategies, gaining organizational funding, and influencing senior engineers without formal authority.
• Must live in an approved US state for remote employment.
