Senior Optical Network Engineer II (Optical Networking)

Location: Livingston, New Jersey, United States. The role requires access to export-controlled information, so applicants must be U.S. persons, eligible for access without authorization, or reasonably likely to obtain the required U.S. authorization.

Salary: $165,000–$220,000 base per year, plus discretionary bonus, equity awards, and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, engineer, deploy, operate, and expand long-haul, metro, and data-center interconnect optical networks.
• Engineer DWDM systems across dark-fiber infrastructure, including wavelength planning, spectrum allocation, amplification, regeneration, and optical power budgets.
• Deploy and troubleshoot Ciena, Nokia, and other optical platforms, including commissioning new fiber spans, wavelengths, and systems.
• Characterize dark fiber and analyze loss, reflectance, dispersion, OSNR, Q-factor, BER, and other optical performance metrics.
• Build monitoring, telemetry, automation, and operational tooling to scale the optical backbone.
• Collaborate with IP Backbone Engineering, network architecture, carriers, data-center operators, fiber providers, and vendors on resilient network design and incident response.

Requirements

• Senior-level experience designing, deploying, and operating large-scale production optical networks.
• Strong hands-on production experience with both Ciena and Nokia optical networking platforms.
• Deep knowledge of dark-fiber engineering, fiber characterization, OTDR testing, loss budgets, route diversity, and shared-risk analysis.
• Expertise in DWDM, coherent optical transmission, C-band and L-band systems, ROADMs, EDFAs, Raman amplification, ZR/ZR+, 400G/800G, FEC, OSNR, Q-factor, PMD, PDL, and spectrum planning.
• Experience troubleshooting optical impairments, degraded fiber spans, hardware, software lifecycles, and operational incidents.
• Must meet U.S. export-control eligibility requirements for access to controlled information.

Nice to have

• IP networking experience with BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, Segment Routing, or service-provider routing platforms.
• Python, REST APIs, NETCONF/YANG, gNMI, OpenConfig, network automation, configuration validation, Git, telemetry, or time-series monitoring experience.
• Experience with multi-vendor optical environments.
