Director, Software Engineering (AI)

Location: Onsite at the Walmart Home Office in Bentonville, Arkansas, United States

Salary: $130,000–$260,000 annual salary in Bentonville; $169,000–$338,000 annual salary in Sunnyvale, California. Additional performance bonuses and stock may apply.

What you will do

• Lead the transformation of Data Ventures L2 support into an engineering-led SRE and production engineering organization.
• Define reliability standards for SLOs, SLAs, observability, alerting, incident management, and production readiness.
• Modernize operations through AI-assisted triage, automation, self-service, and systematic reduction of operational toil.
• Partner with engineering and product teams to improve production ownership, eliminate recurring issues, and strengthen system reliability.
• Establish reliability and operational KPIs while driving improvements in resilience, scalability, performance, and operational excellence.
• Build and develop a high-performing SRE team with strong technical expertise and customer focus.

Requirements

• Engineering leadership experience building and leading SRE, production engineering, or platform teams.
• Deep knowledge of reliability engineering, SLOs, SLAs, observability, incident management, resiliency, and production operations.
• Experience transforming reactive support into proactive, automation-driven SRE practices.
• Strong expertise in DevOps, cloud platforms, monitoring, automation, and operational excellence.
• Ability to apply AI and automation to triage, remediation, self-service, and toil reduction.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 6 years of software engineering experience, or 8 years of relevant experience, plus 3 years of supervisory experience.
