Mechanical Design Engineer (Robotics)

Location: On-site in Chicago, IL or Bolingbrook, IL; candidates must be located in or willing to relocate to the greater Chicago area. Travel up to 25%.

Salary: $120,000–$150,000 USD per year.

What you will do

• Own mechanical design for palletizing, case packing, conveyor, material handling, and end-of-arm tooling systems from concept through manufacturing release.
• Design, prototype, assemble, test, integrate, and commission automated systems using SolidWorks 3D CAD.
• Create and maintain CAD models, assembly structures, drawings, exploded diagrams, BOMs, schematics, SOPs, work instructions, and revision-controlled release documentation.
• Implement and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control subsystems on the shop floor, including robotic integration and system debugging.
• Lead technical execution of automation projects, including milestones, specifications, testing, design for manufacturability, and design for assembly.
• Use field and deployment feedback to perform root cause analysis, improve reliability, and support product development and fleet-wide standardization.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, mechanical systems engineering, mechatronics, robotics, or a related field.
• 3+ years designing mechanical systems, machine assemblies, or equipment for industrial automation and robotic applications.
• Strong proficiency in 3D CAD, ideally SolidWorks, including complete machine assemblies, detailed drawings, GD&T, component selection, and BOMs.
• Knowledge of industrial robotic systems and integration, including robotic arms, EOAT, conveyance, sensors, actuators, guarding, and automation components.
• Hands-on ability to perform mechanical assembly, integration, testing, troubleshooting, modification, and repair on the shop floor.
• Must work on-site in the greater Chicago, Illinois area; willingness to relocate is required if not already located there.

Nice to have

• Advanced SolidWorks, large assembly management, top-down design, configuration-driven design, or PDM/PLM workflow experience.
• Experience designing EOAT and end-of-line applications such as palletizing, case packing, packaging, conveyance, or material handling.
• Experience with PLCs, sensors, actuators, motion control, motors, VFDs, EtherNet/IP, IO-Link, and machine safety systems.
• Knowledge of ISO 10218 and ANSI/RIA robotic safety standards or experience with AutoCAD and other CAD platforms.
