Outpatient Coding Consultant

What you will do

• Review medical records and assign and sequence accurate diagnosis and procedure codes.
• Assign discharge dispositions and abstract coded data for hospital statistics and reporting.
• Identify documentation improvement opportunities, coding issues, denials, claim edits, and medical necessity concerns for follow-up.
• Maintain 95% coding accuracy and 95% accuracy for APC assignment while meeting productivity standards.
• Communicate with coworkers, managers, hospital staff, and other stakeholders about clinical and reimbursement issues.
• Maintain professional credentials through continuing education and participate in sponsored training and in-service sessions.

Requirements

• AHIMA certification such as RHIA, RHIT, or CCS, or AAPC certification such as CPC, CPC-H, COC, CIC, or CRC.
• At least 2 years of hospital or coding consulting experience, including multispecialty outpatient coding.
• Experience with same-day surgery, observation, injections and infusions, ancillary services, emergency department coding, and E/M leveling.
• Proficiency with computerized encoding and abstracting software; experience with EPIC and 3M is preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication, organization, teamwork, time management, and remote-work skills.
• Pass required annual HIPAA and other assigned examinations.

Nice to have

• Experience with facility emergency department coding, radiology, laboratories, clinics, wound care, ultrasound, echocardiography, sleep studies, physical and occupational therapy, and dialysis.
• Experience with denials, NCCI edits, medical necessity, and claim edits.
