Reliability Engineer

Location: Torrance, California, United States; onsite work in a 145,000-square-foot facility. Applicants must meet U.S. Government export-control requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain the required authorization.

Salary: $175,000–$250,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Own quantitative reliability, availability, and capacity-factor analysis for the hirify.global R1 microreactor.
• Translate plant-level reliability and availability targets into measurable requirements for mechanical, electrical, controls, thermal, and balance-of-plant systems.
• Develop and maintain reliability block diagrams, fault trees, FMEA/FMECA models, failure-rate predictions, and related quantitative analyses.
• Identify high-impact failure modes and lead reliability improvement plans with design, manufacturing, test, operations, and reactor systems teams.
• Define reliability demonstration and qualification test strategies, including sample sizes, durations, failure criteria, confidence levels, and statistical acceptance methods.
• Establish reliability dashboards, technical reviews, internal standards, and best practices for highly reliable reactor systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, applied mathematics, physics, statistics, or a related technical field.
• 8+ years of experience in reliability engineering, root cause analysis, failure analysis, statistical analysis, or similar quantitative work on complex hardware systems.
• Working knowledge of statistics, probability, failure modes, and reliability engineering fundamentals.
• Ability to evaluate mechanical and electrical systems, failure mechanisms, reliability risks, and technical data.
• Experience communicating quantitative conclusions and recommendations to engineering teams.
• Must satisfy U.S. Government export-control eligibility requirements.

Nice to have

• Reliability experience in nuclear, aerospace, space, automotive, energy, defense, or other safety- or mission-critical hardware industries.
• Experience with reliability block diagrams, fault trees, FMEA/FMECA, Weibull analysis, MTBF/MTTR, probabilistic risk assessment, availability modeling, or reliability growth.
• Knowledge of risk-informed component classification and 10 CFR 50.69.
• Familiarity with mechanical and electrical design, manufacturing, qualification testing, material limitations, and hardware failure mechanisms.
• Experience with Python, MATLAB, Octave, R, Minitab, SAS, NCSS, or similar engineering-analysis tools.
