TL;DR
Senior Counsel (Insurance Defense): Managing civil defense litigation from case strategy through resolution, including discovery, depositions, motion practice, client communication, mediation, trial preparation, and trial, with an accent on independent case ownership and substantive courtroom responsibility. Focus on developing compelling case themes, handling full caseloads with minimal supervision, and providing leadership to less experienced attorneys.
Location: Sacramento, California; remote, hybrid, or onsite work options are available. An active California Bar license is required, and applicants must be able to practice in California.
Base salary: $160,000–$190,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Attorneys may also receive an annual billable-hours bonus.

What you will do
- Manage litigation matters independently from strategy through resolution.
- Handle discovery, depositions, briefs, court appearances, mediation, expert work, trial preparation, and trials.
- Develop compelling case themes and maintain strong case strategy.
- Communicate routinely with clients and carriers and cultivate client relationships.
- Work collaboratively with attorneys across experience levels.
- Provide leadership and direction to less experienced attorneys.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-approved school.
- Active California Bar license required.
- 8+ years of litigation experience, including deposition and trial preparation.
- Ability to manage full case handling responsibilities, including all aspects of discovery and trial.
- Experience with time-management systems and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Independent judgment, minimal-supervision capability, and excellent verbal, written, and listening skills.
Nice to have
- Insurance defense experience.
- Experience in premises liability, professional liability, personal injury, catastrophic injury, construction, employment, or other civil defense matters.
