Salary: $110,000–$140,000 USD per year

What you will do

  • Own an AI research project from problem framing through experiments and publication.
  • Investigate practical challenges in observability and software operations, including failure detection and diagnosis.
  • Train and evaluate models and AI agents using large-scale data, compute, and GPU infrastructure.
  • Work with a Datadog AI Research mentor and Carnegie Mellon faculty advisor.
  • Publish results, contribute to a dissertation, and help translate successful research into production systems.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program at Carnegie Mellon University in machine learning, computer science, statistics, or a related field.
  • Depth in at least one relevant research area.
  • Experience running experiments, training models, working with GPUs, and reading and reimplementing recent papers.
  • Evidence of research through papers, preprints, open-source contributions, or a substantial lab project.
  • Support from a faculty advisor.
  • Some positions may require eligibility for authorizations under US export control regulations.

Nice to have

  • Experience with observability, monitoring, or site reliability engineering, although it is not required.
  • A long publication record, although it is not required.
