Technical Writer (Defense)

Location: Sterling Heights, Michigan, United States. Travel up to 25% is required for on-site reviews, provisioning events, testing, validation, and fielding activities.

What you will do

• Develop, write, edit, and maintain U.S. Army technical publications in accordance with MIL-STD and TM/IETM requirements.
• Create and update maintenance manuals, operator manuals, provisioning documentation, and logistics support materials.
• Develop and manage Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals using IADS or equivalent tools.
• Gather and validate technical information with engineers, program managers, subject matter experts, and government representatives.
• Update legacy documentation to reflect system changes, engineering change proposals, and field feedback.
• Manage document lifecycles, version control, configuration management, QA/QC reviews, validation, and contract data deliveries.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• At least 3 years of experience developing U.S. Army technical publications.
• Knowledge of Army publication standards, including MIL-STD-40051 and related TM/IETM guidance.
• Experience with IETMs, IADS or equivalent systems, Arbortext or similar structured authoring tools, and XML/SGML-based authoring.
• Experience producing defense-related maintenance or operator manuals, with knowledge of document control, versioning, and configuration management.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance if required.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting U.S. Army watercraft systems, including Landing Craft Utility platforms.
• Advanced IADS experience, including IETM publishing, validation, and troubleshooting.
• Experience with XML/SGML schemas, tagging, data modules, LSA/LSAR data, provisioning, and logistics product development.
• Experience participating in or leading validation and verification events with government customers.
