What you will do
- Evaluate and implement cloud hosting and dissemination solutions for NOAA STAR satellite information products.
- Design and build RESTful APIs that enable users to filter, download, and crop datasets by spatial and temporal regions.
- Process satellite and geospatial data in raster and vector formats, including NetCDF, HDF, GeoTIFF, Shapefile, COG, and Zarr.
- Build prototype applications that ingest, fuse, and serve datasets across different spatial and temporal resolutions.
- Develop quality assurance and science maintenance capabilities for products transitioning to operational use.
- Collaborate with CoastWatch, Cryosphere Science Teams, PolarWatch, and NESDIS stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Geography, GIS, Meteorology, or a related quantitative field.
- 2–5 years of professional experience in scientific programming, software engineering, or data engineering.
- Hands-on experience using AWS to host, manage, and distribute large datasets.
- Strong experience processing Earth observation data in both raster and vector formats, including NetCDF, HDF, GeoTIFF, and Shapefile.
- Strong Python skills, including Xarray, Rasterio, or GeoPandas, and experience building RESTful APIs for data querying and subsetting.
- Ability to develop practical solutions balancing technical constraints with end-user requirements.
Nice to have
- Experience or interest in applying AI and machine learning to geospatial data challenges.
- Experience with NOAA, NESDIS, or federal cloud frameworks.
- Knowledge of OGC web services and standards.
