TL;DR
Data Engineer (AI): Building and evolving the data infrastructure behind predictive features, adaptive learning, and assessment insights with an accent on scalable pipelines, data modelling, and product-facing data systems. Focus on designing reliable data flows across CockroachDB, BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, and pub/sub, improving observability and enabling teams to self-serve trusted data.
Location: Remote within the UK or within GMT +/-2 hours; monthly remote and in-person events take place in London.

What you will do
- Build and evolve data foundations for predictive features, adaptive learning, and assessment insights.
- Design, develop, and improve reliable, scalable data pipelines and models.
- Shape the technical direction of the data platform and improve data movement between applications, the warehouse, and product surfaces.
- Build clean, tested, reusable solutions with Python, SQL, and dbt.
- Improve data quality, observability, reliability, and safe self-service access to data.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, commercial, and education specialists; use AI tools, review code, and mentor engineers.
Requirements
- Significant experience designing, building, maintaining, and scaling production data pipelines and platforms.
- Strong Python and SQL skills with a focus on clear, maintainable, well-tested code.
- Understanding of data modelling, database architecture, and scalable data systems.
- Experience with cloud data warehouses, orchestration tools, and transformation frameworks.
- Ability to own ambiguous problems end to end and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Ability to work remotely from the UK or within GMT +/-2 hours.
Nice to have
- Experience with BigQuery, Airflow, dbt, CockroachDB, Postgres, CDC, or event-driven pipelines.
- Knowledge of Tableau or Metabase.
- Experience with internal tooling, analytics platforms, LLM-powered interfaces, product analytics, or data-powered product features.
