Senior Back-end Engineer (PHP, Commerce)

Location: Fully remote from Estonia, Poland, Romania, Spain, or Ukraine; an office option is available in Riga, Latvia.

What you will do

• Build, ship, optimize, and maintain scalable back-end systems for tax calculations, VAT processing, invoicing, and audit readiness.
• Support financial data accuracy, compliance, and reliable transactional workflows across the e-commerce platform.
• Collaborate with product managers and finance and accounting stakeholders, applying product thinking to technical decisions.
• Own the design and execution of initiatives, including prioritized bug fixes and platform improvements.
• Contribute through code reviews, refactoring, testing, pair programming, and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Requirements

• English: good spoken and written proficiency required.
• 5+ years of back-end development experience with proficiency in PHP or Node.js and willingness to learn the other.
• Strong expertise in high-load architecture, distributed systems, Domain-Driven Design, and CQRS.
• Knowledge of SOLID, TDD, CI/CD, Agile, debugging, unit testing, and application performance optimization.
• Product-minded approach, strong ownership, and practical experience using Claude or other LLM-based coding assistants.

Nice to have

• Experience with PHP 8.1+, Symfony, Laravel, Yii2, Doctrine, and PHPUnit.
• Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Grafana, Kibana, and Prometheus.
• Practical experience applying LLMs to implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, and code-quality improvements.
