TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Data Center): Designing and optimizing cooling infrastructure for large-scale AI data centers with an accent on hydronic systems, liquid cooling, and heat-rejection architectures. Focus on translating GPU thermal requirements into facility-level designs and ensuring system reliability under high-density compute loads.
Location: Must be based in or able to commute to San Francisco or San Jose, CA (4 days per week onsite)
Compensation: $349,000 – $465,000 per year

What you will do
- Own mechanical design standards and reference architectures for large-scale AI data centers.
- Develop cooling architectures including central plants, heat-rejection systems, and direct-to-chip liquid cooling.
- Perform complex thermal, hydraulic, and psychrometric calculations to ensure system efficiency.
- Translate GPU, rack, and cluster thermal requirements into facility cooling specifications.
- Coordinate mechanical interfaces with electrical, structural, and hardware engineering teams.
- Investigate cooling failures and operational risks to drive improvements in future designs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience designing mechanical systems for data centers, mission-critical facilities, or large industrial environments.
- Proficiency in hydronic systems, heat transfer, chilled-water systems, and water treatment.
- Ability to develop and review P&IDs, mechanical layouts, and technical specifications.
- Understanding of mechanical redundancy, failure domains, and operational requirements.
- Must be able to work onsite in San Francisco or San Jose 4 days per week.
Nice to have
- Experience with hyperscale, colocation, HPC, or AI data centers.
- Familiarity with high-density GPU infrastructure and direct-to-chip liquid cooling.
- Experience with engineering tools such as CFD, Pipe-Flo, AFT Fathom, or Revit.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or progress toward licensure.
