TL;DR
Scientific Developer (Chemical Biology Resources) (Machine Learning/Biomedical Data): Developing an open-source drug side-effect resource and machine learning pipelines for extracting safety data from clinical trials, publications, drug labels, and other documents with an accent on biomedical knowledge extraction, data standardisation, and ontology mapping. Focus on building reliable training sets, integrating workflows with ChEMBL and Open Targets, and validating methods with pharmaceutical partners.

Location: Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom; hybrid working arrangements are available.

Salary: £3,452 or £3,861 per month after tax, depending on grade, plus benefits and allowances. Contract length: 2 years.

hirify.global-EBI is a research organisation providing publicly available databases and tools for the storage, analysis, and dissemination of large biological datasets.

What you will do

  • Develop an open-source drug side-effect resource for drug discovery and safety research.
  • Build machine learning and data-processing pipelines to extract safety data from drug labels, clinical trials, publications, and other documents.
  • Map extracted information to biomedical ontologies and prepare clean, reliable training sets.
  • Integrate workflows with Chhirify.global, the Open Targets Platform, and existing team infrastructures.
  • Collaborate with Open Targets pharmaceutical partners to assess, validate, and refine methods.
  • Present project outcomes to the scientific community and stakeholders through publications and presentations.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent experience in cheminformatics, bioinformatics, or a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Interest in biomedical knowledge extraction, data standardisation, and open-source scientific resources.
  • Successful international applicants are offered visa exemptions.

Nice to have

  • Experience applying NLP methods or LLMs in the biomedical domain.
  • Experience with document and text preprocessing, cleaning, transformation, and ontology mapping.
  • Experience with data structures, data models, and databases.
  • Safety or toxicology research experience.
  • Experience with version control and software testing.
