TL;DR
Engineer III or Senior Engineer (Distributed Energy Resources Protection and Control): Developing protection and control standards, settings, logic, and automation templates for safely integrating energy storage, electric vehicles, and other distributed energy resources into the distribution grid with an accent on system stability, ride-through, and anti-islanding. Focus on relay-lab and field testing, IEC 61850 and SCADA integration, acceptance testing, and supporting island and microgrid deployments.
Location: Charlotte, NC, United States. Hybrid work is performed remotely and onsite after onboarding; employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated facility.

What you will do
- Develop protection and control standards, application guides, and position statements for distributed energy resource integration.
- Create protection and control settings, logic, and control templates for reclosers, grounding banks, switchgear, and generation step-up transformers.
- Support control and automation standards for equipment used in distributed energy resource integration.
- Perform hands-on testing in relay and field laboratories, factories, and during field acceptance testing.
- Collaborate with engineering, construction, distribution control, asset management, and other internal stakeholders.
- Provide subject-matter expertise, mentorship, peer leadership, and input into training documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program; a master’s degree may substitute for the bachelor’s degree.
- Engineer III: at least 4 years of related experience.
- Senior Engineer: at least 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
- Experience or knowledge in system protection, coordination, distributed energy resources, relay settings and logic, and protection and control system integration.
- Knowledge of IEEE 1547-2018, IEEE 2030, IEC 61850, SCADA, DNP3, SEL equipment, and OMICRON testing tools is relevant to the role.
- Must be able to work lawfully in the United States without current or future employment-based immigration sponsorship.
Nice to have
- Professional Engineer registration.
- Utility industry experience and experience integrating power plants, distributed resources, or large customer facilities.
- Experience with factory and field acceptance testing, relay programming, application guides, and standards templates.
- Experience with medium-voltage systems in the 4kV–36kV class.
