Backend Engineer (Node.js)

Location: Remote; CET hours preferred

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Develop product features from concept through deployment in collaboration with product managers and frontend engineers.
• Own backend architecture decisions focused on performance, reliability, security, and clean design.
• Build and improve event-driven systems, background processing, analytics pipelines, and search functionality.
• Write unit tests, review code, refactor legacy code, and implement system improvements.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering practices and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend development experience, preferably in a product-driven environment.
• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js and Koa or NestJS, plus advanced TypeScript expertise.
• Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases.
• Familiarity with distributed, event-driven systems using Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Bull/Redis.
• Hands-on experience with ClickHouse or similar analytics databases and Elasticsearch.
• Comfort working within a Russian-speaking team. Strong system design, performance optimization, ownership, and communication skills are also required.

Nice to have

• Experience working in a remote-first, globally distributed team.
• Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or similar observability tools.
• Interest in nonprofit technology and experience communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
