Senior Software Engineer (Mapping Data & Evaluation)

Location: On-site in Mountain View or San Francisco, California

Salary: $213,000–$263,000 USD base salary per year, plus eligibility for an annual bonus, equity incentives, and company benefits.

Waymo develops autonomous driving technology and the Waymo Driver, an autonomous driving system used for ride-hailing and other vehicle platforms.

What you will do

• Evaluate and launch machine learning models that automatically generate maps from raw sensor data.
• Collaborate with onboard engineering teams to evolve Waymo’s mapping format for automation.
• Apply statistical analysis and quantitative evaluation to validate large-scale changes.
• Build backend infrastructure for storing and processing multiple forms of mapping data.
• Scale mapping systems to support high-definition mapping across the world.
• Work across the full modeling lifecycle, including labeling, training, evaluation, inference, and impact measurement.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Hands-on experience with statistical analysis, experiment design, and quantitative evaluation of machine learning models or data pipelines.
• Experience building scalable data-processing pipelines with distributed frameworks such as Google Dataflow or Apache Beam.
• Ability to own complex technical problems end to end and deliver measurable results in a collaborative environment.
• Strong software engineering skills.

Nice to have

• Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Vision, or a related quantitative field.
• Experience with high-performance computing, C++ optimization, and large-scale distributed systems architecture.
• Familiarity with autonomous vehicles, robotics, high-definition mapping, GIS, or spatial databases.
