R&D Intern (AI)

Location: On-site in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA

What you will do

• Collect, curate, and structure experimental data for machine learning applications in R&D.
• Develop and validate interpretable models that predict material and formulation properties.
• Analyze model outputs to identify structure-property relationships and generate scientific insights.
• Use machine learning to propose formulations and candidate materials that meet target performance requirements.
• Build workflows for data preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, and evaluation.
• Develop automated pipelines integrating historical and laboratory-generated datasets, and present findings to scientists and engineers.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science, or a related discipline.
• Proficiency in Python and scientific computing libraries including Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, and PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Strong understanding of machine learning model development, validation, and interpretation.
• Strong theoretical knowledge of chemistry, polymer science, or materials science.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary scientific teams.

Nice to have

• Coursework or a minor in computer science, data science, statistics, or a related field.
• Research experience in machine learning, computational chemistry, materials informatics, or polymer science.
• Experience with molecular, materials, chemical, or formulation datasets.
• Familiarity with feature engineering, dimensionality reduction, optimization, or generative AI for scientific applications.
