TL;DR
Staff Frontend Engineer (Video) (TypeScript/React): Leading frontend architecture and hands-on development for Canva’s video editor, including integration of a native video rendering engine and a video-specific data model with an accent on interactive web applications, effects, and operational ownership. Focus on designing scalable systems, enabling features such as adjustment layers and masking, and maintaining reliability through monitoring, rollout, and observability.
Location: Sydney, Australia; hybrid work with regular collaboration at the Sydney campus

Canva develops a collaborative creative software platform and is expanding its video editing capabilities.
What you will do
- Lead technical direction across Video Editor projects, review design documents, and guide project captains on architectural decisions.
- Integrate Canva’s native video rendering engine into the editor, replacing the existing CSS and JavaScript rendering stack.
- Help build the video-specific data model that replaces the inherited fixed-page model and enables advanced effects.
- Own features beyond launch, including monitoring, rollout, observability, and operational reliability.
- Raise engineering standards through hands-on coding, code reviews, mentoring, and technical leadership.
Requirements
- Experience serving as a technical lead for a team of engineers and providing trusted technical direction.
- Hands-on experience writing code and owning complex, interactive web applications used by many people.
- Strong TypeScript and React skills, with the ability to make architectural decisions for growing products.
- Systems thinking and an understanding of how frontend decisions affect backend systems and vice versa.
- Experience with operational ownership, measurement, rollout monitoring, and maintaining production systems after launch.
- Based in Sydney, Australia and able to work in a hybrid arrangement.
Nice to have
- Audio engineering or audio processing experience.
- Video editing, multimedia, content creation tools, or design software experience.
- Real-time collaborative editing, including OT or CRDT conflict-resolution patterns.
- Graphics programming, WebGL, or C++ experience.
