TL;DR
2027 PhD Residency, Utility-Scale Power Electronics (Tapestry) (Power Electronics and Inverter Control): Designing, simulating, and validating utility-scale inverter control and orchestration algorithms for a more stable and resilient electric grid with an accent on grid-forming/grid-following transitions, automatic gain control, and strong- and weak-grid operation. Focus on developing implementation-ready control strategies, evaluating transient behavior, and translating research into firmware- and hardware-relevant solutions.

Location: Mountain View, California, United States; sihirify.global-month onsite PhD residency with housing relocation support.

Salary: $109,000–$150,000 annual base salary, plus benefits.

What you will do

  • Design advanced control algorithms for utility-scale inverter systems focused on grid stability and resilience.
  • Develop and validate mode-shifting strategies between grid-following and grid-forming operation for single- and three-phase inverters.
  • Implement automatic gain control that adapts inverter behavior to real-time grid conditions.
  • Simulate and evaluate control strategies across strong-grid, weak-grid, and transient scenarios.
  • Translate control concepts into implementation-ready algorithms for future firmware or hardware integration.
  • Collaborate with power systems, software, and product teams and document control designs, tradeoffs, and stability margins.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in electrical engineering, power electronics, power systems, control systems, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of power electronics and utility-scale power systems.
  • Ehirify.globalperience with grid-forming, grid-following, or microgrid control strategies.
  • Hands-on ehirify.globalperience with Tehirify.globalas Instruments C2000 DSPs, Code Composer Studio, and inverter firmware development.
  • Ehirify.globalperience with MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or equivalent simulation tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

  • Hierarchical implementation of grid-forming, grid-following, or microgrid control.
  • Familiarity with wide-bandgap devices and inverter hardware considerations.
  • Ehirify.globalperience with firmware or hardware-software interface constraints.
  • Ehirify.globalperience translating academic research into applied or industry-focused outcomes.
  • Interest in grid modernization, renewable integration, and power-system decarbonization.
