TL;DR
Staff Frontend Engineer (Performance Monitoring) (JavaScript/TypeScript, React, OpenTelemetry): Building SDKs, dashboards, CI/PR checks, and data pipelines that monitor web performance using real-user and synthetic data, with an accent on low-overhead observability and statistical regression detection. Focus on profiling systemic bottlenecks, processing billions of events, and creating developer-friendly tools that prevent performance regressions.
Location: Sydney, Australia, with an additional campus in Melbourne. Flexible choice in where and how to work within the available campus-based setup; interviews are conducted virtually.

What you will do
- Design and maintain lightweight SDKs, dashboards, and CI/PR checks for LCP, INP, CLS, and other performance metrics.
- Implement OpenTelemetry standards and extend data pipelines processing billions of real-user events daily.
- Partner with platform and infrastructure teams to build low-overhead metric collection, reusable libraries, CLIs, and developer tools.
- Launch statistical “no-merge-if-slower” checks with clear regression diff reports.
- Investigate, reproduce, and eliminate systemic performance bottlenecks using Chrome DevTools, Lighthouse, and related tools.
- Analyze real-user and synthetic data to identify high-impact improvements to monitoring tools and the product.
Requirements
- Proven frontend expertise with JavaScript or TypeScript and React.
- Experience with Node-based services and tools, data pipelines, and modern CI/CD workflows.
- Ability to design statistically sound experiments and make data-driven decisions.
- Strong communication skills for explaining performance data and technical findings to engineers, product managers, executives, and other stakeholders.
- Experience influencing stakeholders and driving priorities across product, platform, and leadership teams.
Nice to have
- Deep knowledge of web rendering pipelines, main-thread bottlenecks, network protocols, and performance APIs.
- Experience with large-scale observability and Real User Monitoring systems.
- Experience with OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Looker, Mode, or similar platforms processing millions of events per minute.
- Strong TypeScript skills across client and server codebases.
