TL;DR
Senior Mechanisms Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and delivering mechanical actuation systems for long-range hypersonic strike vehicles with an accent on elevon drive trains, control surface mechanisms, precision mechanical design, and operation under extreme flight conditions. Focus on leading mechanism architecture, performing structural and dynamic analysis, integrating electromechanical actuators with vehicle systems, and validating hardware through environmental testing.
Location: Torrance, California, or Rio Rancho, New Mexico, United States
Company
develops and delivers advanced defense systems, including long-range hypersonic strike vehicles.
What you will do
- Design and develop mechanical actuation systems, elevon drive trains, and control surface mechanisms for high-speed flight vehicles.
- Lead mechanism architecture and detailed design covering gear trains, linkages, bearings, and structural components.
- Analyze loads, stresses, deflections, dynamic behavior, fatigue, tolerances, lubrication, and reliability in extreme environments.
- Integrate mechanisms with control electronics, GNC, avionics, and structures systems.
- Support prototyping, assembly, hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and qualification testing.
- Optimize designs for mass, stiffness, reliability, and manufacturability while mentoring junior engineers and supporting technical trade-offs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in mechanism design, analysis, and validation for aerospace or other high-performance mechanical systems.
- Strong experience with gear trains, actuation systems, precision mechanical design, and aerospace electromechanical actuators.
- Experience with motor selection, gear reduction, torque transmission, position feedback, control surface drive systems, or comparable high-load mechanisms.
- Proficiency with CAD and analysis tools such as NX, SolidWorks, ANSYS, or equivalent.
- Experience with hardware build and testing, high-temperature materials, lubrication strategies, and extreme operating environments.
Culture & Benefits
- Fast-paced, hardware-driven environment with a high flight cadence.
- Significant ownership and direct impact in an early-stage organization.
- Collaboration across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Generous benefits package.
- Access to classified or export-controlled information may require U.S. government authorization, security clearance, or other eligibility requirements if applicable.
