Principal Data Scientist (AI Engineer)

Location: Hybrid in Oakland, California, with in-person attendance at the Oakland Headquarters 1–2 times per week or as required

Salary: $163,000–$277,000 per year, plus eligibility for discretionary incentive compensation programs

What you will do

• Provide hands-on technical leadership for AI Advisory, AI Governance, and AI Factory initiatives.
• Set architecture direction for generative AI, agentic AI, machine learning, automation, and reusable enterprise AI patterns.
• Design and implement production-grade AI systems using Python, AWS Bedrock, enterprise LLM gateways, APIs, vector search, and secure integrations.
• Develop agentic AI capabilities including tool use, memory, orchestration, multi-agent workflows, and human-in-the-loop controls.
• Define evaluation, regression testing, red teaming, observability, performance monitoring, cost tracking, and lifecycle practices.
• Mentor technical teams and collaborate with architecture, cybersecurity, legal, privacy, governance, product, and business stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in data science, machine learning, computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, or a related quantitative field.
• At least 8 years of experience in data science, machine learning, AI engineering, advanced analytics, or related technical roles; 2 years may qualify with a doctoral degree or higher.
• Advanced Python skills, including reusable package development, APIs, testing, CI/CD, and software engineering practices.
• Experience with cloud AI platforms, agent orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation, vector databases, MLOps, LLMOps, and enterprise data integration.
• Knowledge of responsible AI, privacy-aware design, security guardrails, auditability, fairness, model cards, and human oversight.
• Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement from Oakland, California, with regular in-person attendance at the headquarters.

Nice to have

• Experience with AWS Bedrock, AWS cloud architecture, LangGraph, LangChain, CrewAI, enterprise LLM gateways, knowledge bases, or similar technologies.
• Experience designing tool-using agents, workflow automation agents, RAG assistants, or multi-agent systems.
• Experience with golden datasets, LLM-as-judge evaluation, regression testing, red teaming, benchmarking, and production monitoring.
• Experience in utilities, energy, infrastructure, financial services, healthcare, public sector, or another regulated industry.
• Publications, conference presentations, open-source contributions, patents, standards development, or professional leadership in AI or data science.
