TL;DR
Firmware Engineer Intern, BS - Summer 2027 (Embedded Firmware): Developing and testing embedded firmware, device drivers, provisioning software, and trusted firmware stacks for data center, AI, storage, networking, and security hardware with an accent on communication protocols, RTOS-based systems, automation, and hardware/software integration. Focus on debugging complex issues, implementing security features, executing unit and integration tests, and optimizing mission-critical firmware across the product lifecycle.

Location: Santa Clara, CA, United States

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain embedded firmware for data center, AI, SSD, DSP, and networking hardware platforms.
  • Design device drivers and firmware features for SPI, I2C, I3C, UART, MDIO, PCIe, NVMe, and RTOS-based systems.
  • Contribute across the product lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, validation, and customer release.
  • Create Python, shell, and Bash automation for testing, failure analysis, lab workflows, and infrastructure management.
  • Develop provisioning software and trusted firmware stacks with cryptography and secure protocols such as TLS/SSL and IPSec.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, QA, and customer solutions teams to debug issues, analyze root causes, optimize performance, and manage fixes.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with expected graduation between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or C.
  • Understanding of computer architecture, networking fundamentals, embedded systems, the OSI model, and TCP/IP.
  • Comfort working in Windows or Linux development environments.
  • Strong problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Eligibility to access export-controlled technology may be required under U.S. export control laws; an export license review may apply.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Git, GitHub, Gerrit, Makefiles, GDB, IDEs, ARM, RISC-V, TrustZone, Caliptra, or Trusted Firmware.
  • Knowledge of RTOS architecture, device drivers, communication protocols, security protocols, digital certificates, or cryptography.
  • Experience with DSP concepts, Ethernet, SERDES, switches, routers, Jenkins CI, regression planning, GUI development, lab automation, or customer SDKs.
  • Experience with unit testing, system integration, debugging tools, and customer documentation.
