Staff Backend Engineer (Crypto)

Phantom is a fully remote crypto and fintech product company building a self-custodial wallet and access point to open financial markets, supporting networks including Solana, Ethereum, Polygon, and Bitcoin.

What you will do

• Design, maintain, and evolve backend services and REST APIs connecting Phantom Cash to blockchains.
• Build event-driven systems with queues, retries, and idempotency.
• Develop reliable API architecture covering versioning, pagination, error models, authentication, and rate limiting.
• Integrate blockchain protocols and on-chain programs with off-chain services, with a preference for Solana and openness to EVM.
• Operate production systems using Kubernetes, AWS, CI/CD, observability, and on-call ownership.
• Document technical decisions, communicate across pods, mentor engineers, and raise the engineering quality bar.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong experience with Node.js and NestJS at scale, distributed-systems fundamentals, concurrency, ordering, retries, and data consistency.
• Experience designing REST APIs and understanding client-server trade-offs, state management, and latency budgets.
• Hands-on experience in crypto or fintech, such as exchanges, wallets, payment rails, or ledgers.
• Understanding of smart contracts, blockchain protocols, and blockchain integrations; Solana experience is preferred and EVM experience is acceptable.
• Experience shipping high-quality products in mature engineering organizations, with strong communication and pragmatic problem-solving skills.
