Senior Data Architect (Databricks)

Location: Hybrid across major Australian locations, including Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth; occasional travel to client sites. Open to Permanent Residency Visa.

What you will do

• Lead the technical uplift of Databricks Lakehouse platforms for clients and define governed, automated, production-grade data delivery foundations.
• Design Unity Catalog metastore provisioning, catalog and schema hierarchies, workspace binding, and access models.
• Design Microsoft Purview classification, PII handling, lineage scanning, and source registration architecture.
• Define CI/CD promotion models, dev/test/prod environment separation, and Azure DevOps and Databricks Asset Bundles implementation patterns.
• Design Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines ingestion patterns and migration paths from Azure Data Factory, including resolution of pipeline and cluster architecture conflicts.
• Provide technical governance, review engineering deliverables, facilitate client design workshops, obtain sign-off, and contribute to presales and scoping.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of data platform experience, including at least 2 years in a hands-on Databricks architecture role.
• Current Databricks certification, such as Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional or Databricks Certified Associate Developer for Apache Spark.
• Deep hands-on experience with Unity Catalog, including metastore provisioning, catalog and schema hierarchy design, workspace binding, and access model implementation.
• Experience designing and implementing Databricks CI/CD pipelines with Azure DevOps and Databricks Asset Bundles, including dev/test/prod separation.
• Understanding of Infrastructure as Code principles and tools such as Terraform, ARM templates, or Bicep for Azure data platform resources.
• Experience designing and deploying Microsoft Purview, including classification, PII controls, lineage scanning, and source registration.
• Experience with Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines or Databricks Delta Live Tables and migration architecture from Azure Data Factory.
• Strong understanding of Bronze/Silver/Gold medallion architecture and ability to define consistent engineering standards and patterns.
• Ability to create actionable architecture artefacts, including source-to-target mapping standards, environment design documents, and security models.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including design workshops, architecture presentations, and client sign-off.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.

Nice to have

• Experience remediating Azure data environment security issues, including Blob storage access controls and Synapse Link/CDC configurations.
• Familiarity with Coalesce as a Databricks transformation layer and its integration with Unity Catalog and CI/CD pipelines.
• Exposure to membership-based, not-for-profit, or similar organisations with complex data residency and PII obligations.
• Experience contributing to presales and scoping, including effort estimation and technical proposal writing.
• Understanding of Databricks cost management and cluster policy design.
