Staff Functional Safety Architect (Industrial Application)

Location: Shanghai, China; onsite role with no remote work available.

What you will do

• Define and govern system-level functional safety architectures spanning sensors, MCUs/SoCs, power devices, actuators, and communication interfaces.
• Translate standards, regulations, and customer use cases into system, hardware, and software safety requirements.
• Lead HARA, safety concept development, safety lifecycle planning, and safety analyses including FMEA, FMEDA, and FTA.
• Define diagnostics, redundancy, fault-handling, safe-state, fault-containment, and freedom-from-interference strategies across hardware and software.
• Review safety-related design, implementation, verification, validation, safety documentation, and certification activities.
• Collaborate with product, architecture, hardware, software, validation, customer, assessor, and certification teams; provide technical guidance and training.

Requirements

• Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of embedded or industrial system development experience with significant functional safety responsibility.
• Experience as a Functional Safety Architect, Safety Manager, or Lead Safety Engineer for industrial or automation systems.
• Deep knowledge of IEC 61508, IEC 62061, ISO 13849, safety lifecycles, HARA, safety concepts, safety analysis, and safety validation.
• Knowledge of embedded architectures, microcontrollers/SoCs, real-time software, and industrial protocols such as CAN, EtherCAT, PROFINET, and Modbus.
• Strong cross-functional communication and documentation skills, including preparation of safety requirements, safety manuals, and safety cases.

Nice to have

• Functional Safety certification such as TÜV Functional Safety Engineer or Professional.
• Experience with cybersecurity and its interaction with functional safety.
• Background in robotics, motion control, motor drives, or industrial power conversion.
• Familiarity with semiconductor safety architectures, safety libraries, and safety-certified IP.
• Experience supporting third-party assessments and certifications with notified bodies.
