Head of R&D Portfolio & Project Management (Genomics)

Location: San Diego, California, United States; hybrid work

Salary: $205,100–$307,700 base salary per year, plus eligible bonus, commission, and equity programs.

What you will do

• Lead the R&D PMO across a complex portfolio, ensuring disciplined execution, predictable delivery, and operational rigor.
• Own and improve PMO standards, methodologies, governance models, delivery frameworks, and enabling tools.
• Translate portfolio priorities into executable programs, roadmaps, sequencing, and capacity-informed plans.
• Provide dashboards, metrics, and execution insights to support portfolio trade-offs and leadership decisions.
• Manage cross-functional dependencies and alignment across a matrixed R&D organization.
• Attract, coach, develop, and retain PMO and R&D talent while fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture.

Requirements

• Advanced degree in Life Sciences, Business, or a related field; an MBA or PhD is preferred.
• 12–15+ years of experience in R&D portfolio or project management and operations leadership.
• Demonstrated success building PMO capabilities, improving delivery performance, and developing PMO talent.
• Experience managing development programs involving instruments, assays, regulated products, and software.
• Advanced understanding of stage-gate product development and risk management.
• Strong communication, leadership, stakeholder management, and change leadership skills in matrixed organizations.

Nice to have

• PMP or similar certification.
