Assistant General Counsel, Commercial Transactions (Insurance)

Location: Ota-ku, Japan; primarily in the office

What you will do

• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial, vendor, procurement, consulting, data licensing, and SaaS agreements.
• Partner with business and procurement teams on day-to-day contracting needs while balancing legal risk and practical outcomes.
• Advise stakeholders on contract terms, legal risks, regulatory developments, changes in law, and company policies.
• Coordinate with privacy, cybersecurity, regulatory, insurance, and intellectual property specialists on contract issues.
• Improve contract templates, playbooks, and processes to increase efficiency and reduce turnaround times.
• Manage external advisors and outside counsel.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and Bachelor of Law degree or equivalent.
• Qualified to practice law in Japan.
• 7+ years of experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts at a Big 5, US, or UK law firm and in-house.
• Business-level English and Japanese.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, collaborate cross-functionally, and provide pragmatic business-focused solutions.
