Mid Astro Software Engineer

Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States

Salary: $115,900–$173,800 per year for Colorado Springs, CO.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain Java applications and Spring Boot backend services, including REST APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.
• Design and implement secure end-to-end cluster and application lifecycles in AWS and other cloud environments.
• Develop and optimize astrodynamics propagation algorithms, numerical methods, frame transformations, measurement models, and time-scale solutions.
• Build and maintain secure CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments using GitLab, Kubernetes or Docker, Ansible, Maven, and Gradle.
• Modernize legacy Fortran and C++ components while supporting Python, C++, and Bash automation.
• Manage logs, monitor systems, work with databases, and analyze large datasets to identify anomalies and outliers.

Requirements

• Secret clearance or above is required.
• 3–5 years of experience developing web-based applications and working with Kubernetes or Docker.
• Experience with astrodynamics propagation, perturbation models, celestial and terrestrial frame transformations, measurement models, time scales, Earth orientation, root finding, and interpolation.
• Experience with AWS cloud technologies, CI/CD, Agile, DevOps, and DevSecOps methodologies.
• Proficiency with Java, Spring Boot, GitLab, Ansible, Maven, Gradle, and scripting languages including Matlab, Python, and Bash.
• Experience with test-driven development, unit and integration testing, statistical analysis, and databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, or MongoDB.

Nice to have

• Experience with Orekit, Astropy, STK, or equivalent astrodynamics libraries.
• Experience optimizing numerical, scientific, or backend algorithms for performance, accuracy, scalability, or computational efficiency.
• Knowledge of IERS conventions, including FK5 and CIO-based theories.
• Experience with Apache Kafka, Kubernetes-native deployment patterns, service mesh technologies such as Istio, or log management and analytics tools.
