Scientist, Downstream Process Development (Biotechnology)

Location: Columbia, Maryland, United States

Salary: $100,000–$135,000 per year, plus bonuses and benefits.

What you will do

• Apply scientific and engineering knowledge to separations processes and interconnected bioprocesses.
• Design, execute, and analyze downstream processes at bench scale.
• Optimize production-scale processes using scale-down, scale-up, and technology-transfer expertise.
• Develop and evaluate processes involving oil and lipid chemistry, emulsions, and separation technologies.
• Plan and execute complex research projects, including reviews, reporting, and stakeholder management.
• Collaborate with Strain Improvement, Fermentation, Analytical, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to move solutions from the laboratory toward implementation.

Requirements

• BS in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field, with 5+ years of hands-on industry experience; an MS or PhD may partially substitute for industrial experience.
• Proven experience in process and product innovation and hands-on laboratory or pilot-scale bioprocessing recovery equipment.
• Strong understanding of unit operations, material and energy balances, separation technologies, downstream process trains, and interconnected process modeling.
• Experience applying statistics and design of experiments to development workplans.
• Strong ownership, accountability, prioritization, organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
