TL;DR
Tactical Systems Engineer (C/C++/Python): Architecting, refactoring, and integrating mission-critical Navy tactical systems software into a microservices-based platform for cloud-native and tactical-edge deployments with an accent on combat systems, distributed processing, and production-ready architecture. Focus on modernizing legacy monoliths, designing software and hardware interfaces, prototyping AI/ML solutions, and supporting test and integration activities for surface and unmanned platforms.

Location: Hybrid/on-site in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, with at least 4 days per week in the office; up to 10% travel may be required. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance.

Salary: $114,000–$231,000 per year, with ranges varying by level, experience, skills, and education.

What you will do

  • Design, implement, test, and integrate complex software using C, C++, Python, JavaScript, and Java.
  • Analyze and incrementally modernize legacy monolithic weapons-system software using brownfield and greenfield approaches.
  • Assess and deconstruct Navy tactical system code for Surface Navy combat systems, including AEGIS and SSDS environments.
  • Develop software architecture, requirements, specifications, and hardware/software interfaces for tactical systems.
  • Prototype next-generation solutions using AI/ML, distributed processing, and modeling.
  • Collaborate with customers and leadership on requirements, technical progress, cost, schedule, testing, and integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 5 years of full-time professional experience developing tactical systems software on Department of Defense programs.
  • Experience with combat system design and software, ideally AEGIS or Ship Self Defense System.
  • Experience with C, C++, Python, and/or Java; Linux development and shell scripting.
  • Knowledge of distributed systems, algorithms, data structures, software design patterns, Agile development, Git configuration management, and DevSecOps.
  • Ability to work on-site in Mount Laurel, NJ and obtain or maintain an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Make, Maven, Ant, X-Windows, MBSE, Jenkins, Jira, and the Atlassian tool suite.
  • Knowledge of networking, intrusion detection, firewalls, VMware vSphere, Azure, containers, and complex mixed-code development environments.
  • Strong analytical, communication, problem-solving, organization, planning, teamwork, and ownership skills.
