TL;DR
Senior GNC Engineer II - Mission Formulation (Aerospace): Designing and analyzing guidance, navigation, and control systems for Rocket Lab launch vehicles and missions with an accent on trajectory design, mission formulation, and real-time control. Focus on Monte Carlo simulations, hardware-in-the-loop testing, flight code release, flight safety analysis, and automated flight termination system readiness.

Location: Onsite in Long Beach, California or Littleton, Colorado, United States. Candidates working in U.S. offices must meet applicable ITAR authorization requirements.

Base pay: $162,000–$216,000 USD annually for California.

What you will do

  • Serve as the GNC contact for business development proposals and mission definition.
  • Develop launch and mission operational concepts, orbital and suborbital trajectories, and mission analyses.
  • Work with customers and external stakeholders to define mission-specific requirements and document GNC solutions.
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop testing, Monte Carlo simulations, and verification of trajectories, GNC, and flight-code performance.
  • Develop and release flight code for ground testing, launch, and mission operations.
  • Conduct flight-safety analyses, provide day-of-launch support, verify AFTS hardware and software readiness, and automate GNC modeling and analysis tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in engineering or analytical roles.
  • Proven experience developing real-time control and/or estimation algorithms for autonomous vehicles, preferably launch vehicles.
  • For U.S. office work, eligibility under applicable ITAR export-control regulations is required, such as U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, refugee or asylum status, or eligibility to obtain the required authorization.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing engineering projects, and collaborate across engineering and production teams.

Nice to have

  • Active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Experience with requirements assessments, interface control documents, and Git.
  • Experience with dynamics modeling, simulation, control systems, Python, MATLAB, SciPy, and C/C++.
  • Experience with POST, ASTOS, TAOS, or similar mission analysis, trajectory optimization, vehicle design, and simulation tools.
  • Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving, and planning skills.
