Lead Backend Engineer (Fintech)

Location: Milan, Italy; hybrid with three days per week in-office (Tuesday, Thursday, and one additional day), with the option to request extra remote time

Salary: €51,000–€66,500 gross per annum

What you will do

• Design, implement, operate, and own backend services supporting payment flows, identity verification, loyalty, and consumer engagement.
• Work across the full service lifecycle, including API design, data modelling, production rollouts, and on-call ownership.
• Lead technical analysis and design discussions for projects spanning multiple teams, producing clear technical documentation.
• Improve engineering quality through testing strategies, progressive rollouts, maintainable services, and technical debt reduction.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on cross-service dependencies, event-driven patterns, and operational excellence.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in backend software engineering.
• Deep experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and external dependencies such as banking protocols.
• Experience with cloud environments; AWS experience is an advantage.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and coordinate implementations across teams.
• Fluent English and a strong interest in FinTech.
