Staff Frontend Engineer (TypeScript)

Location: Sydney, Australia. Hybrid work with regular collaboration at the Sydney campus; the role is intended for someone based in Sydney.

What you will do

• Design, develop and deploy software solutions for Canva's editor in partnership with engineering leads, designers and product managers.
• Rebuild core editor architecture primarily in TypeScript, with opportunities to work across React Native and native surfaces.
• Drive measurable improvements to page load, interaction performance, reliability and memory usage using instrumentation and performance data.
• Build tools, frameworks and libraries that help engineers create performant features.
• Own complex technical problems, break initiatives into achievable pieces and drive work from idea through delivery.
• Share technical knowledge and collaborate across teams on editor improvements.

Requirements

• Strong commercial software engineering experience with complex, large-scale applications, SDKs or APIs.
• Deep TypeScript experience and the ability to navigate large, long-lived codebases.
• Experience contributing to architecture decisions and solving complex engineering problems.
• Comfort working with performance data, instrumenting metrics, interpreting dashboards and using evidence to prioritise work.
• Strong computer science fundamentals, including asynchronous programming, data structures, solution design, architecture and design patterns.
• Clear communication, effective collaboration and a willingness to share knowledge.

Nice to have

• Experience with browser rendering, event handling, WebWorkers, WebGL or WebGPU.
• Familiarity with native rendering pipelines or JavaScript engine internals.
