TL;DR
Network Engineer (xAI Battery Storage) (Industrial Networking/OT): Designing, commissioning, and operating deterministic, redundant, and secure operational technology networks for battery energy storage systems with an accent on industrial protocols, fiber and copper infrastructure, and precision time distribution. Focus on IEC 62443 segmentation, network validation, failover testing, and troubleshooting communications across battery packs, inverters, plant controllers, and energy management systems.

Location: On-site in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. This is not a remote or hybrid role. Travel up to 25% may be required for factory witness testing, vendor and OEM engagement, and support of other sites.

Company

Develops AI systems designed to understand the universe and support humanity's pursuit of knowledge.

What you will do

  • Design, build, operate, and maintain operational technology networks for battery storage systems supporting AI training campuses.
  • Define network topology, redundancy, switch configuration, VLANs, subnets, IP addressing, and site architecture across the storage fleet.
  • Design and manage fiber and copper infrastructure, including splice plans, patch panels, labeling, OTDR acceptance testing, and pathway coordination.
  • Integrate Modbus TCP, DNP3, and IEC 61850 protocols, including GOOSE communication and mappings between pack controllers, PCS, plant controllers, and EMS.
  • Implement precision time distribution using PTP under IEEE 1588 and IRIG-B for sequence-of-events and disturbance analysis.
  • Commission industrial networking equipment and support validation, latency and packet-loss testing, failover testing, cybersecurity controls, and communications troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline, or 6+ years of relevant experience instead of a degree.
  • 3+ years of industrial, utility, or operational technology network engineering experience.
  • Hands-on experience configuring managed industrial switches and routers.
  • Experience with at least one of Modbus TCP, DNP3, or IEC 61850.
  • Hands-on fiber optic termination, testing, and troubleshooting experience.
  • Ability to work on-site in Memphis, work extended hours and weekends, provide 24/7 emergency on-call support, work in hazardous environments, and lift up to 25 lbs.

Nice to have

  • Battery energy storage, solar, or substation automation network experience.
  • IEC 61850 station and process bus design experience, including GOOSE performance requirements.
  • IEC 62443 or NERC CIP program experience.
  • Experience with Cisco, Hirschmann, Moxa, RuggedCom, or comparable industrial platforms.
  • Familiarity with IEEE C37.115 and IEEE C37.111.

Culture & Benefits

  • Small, hands-on team focused on engineering excellence and direct contribution to the company mission.
  • Flat organizational structure with leadership opportunities based on initiative and delivery.
  • Work includes construction, energization, commissioning, and ongoing operations support.
  • Valid driver's license required for the role.
