Director - Underwriting, Personal Lines

Location: Remote within any of the lower 48 U.S. states. Occasional travel may be required to visit agencies or attend meetings.

Salary: $122,000–$214,000 nationally; expected starting range: $122,000–$182,000 annually.

What you will do

• Lead multi-line personal lines underwriting teams and direct execution against underwriting strategy, objectives, and goals.
• Drive profitable underwriting results through portfolio management, risk selection, quality assessment, and agency portfolio decisions.
• Translate strategic plans into organizational direction, business plans, budgets, timelines, and measurable performance goals.
• Lead organizational change, modernization, research, analysis, and process improvement initiatives.
• Build collaborative relationships with Claims, Sales, Product, IT, vendors, regulators, agents, and other internal and external partners.
• Coach and develop underwriting managers and associates, oversee performance management, and direct training and education.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree; continued education is desired, and a master's degree in business or a related field is preferred.
• At least eight years of underwriting, customer service, or related experience, with significant business management and people leadership experience.
• Detailed knowledge of personal lines insurance products, state regulations, underwriting policies, procedures, and best practices.
• Strong knowledge of company operations, financials, trend analysis, and competitor data to drive underwriting performance.
• Demonstrated ability to set strategic priorities, make decisions, analyze complex business challenges, and drive results.
• Strong communication, leadership, coaching, talent development, and matrix relationship management skills.

Nice to have

• Experience in agency, carrier, broker, or client-facing insurance environments.
• Completion of technical insurance coursework such as CPCU.
• Experience leading transformation, change management, or underwriting modernization initiatives.
