Autonomous Driving System Safety Lead (AI)

Location: Mountain View, California, United States

Base pay: $213,480–$319,720 annually, plus performance bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Own and author safety claims for onboard and offboard software in the forward-facing ADS safety case.
• Understand ADS designs, interfaces, technical capabilities, AI architecture, and system requirements in collaboration with robotics, software infrastructure, data platform, operations, and legal teams.
• Decompose claims into atomic claims, delegate work to cross-functional teams, and manage the quality of resulting evidence.
• Generate counter-arguments, identify gaps, and ensure risks, test gaps, and architecture insufficiencies are addressed or mitigated.
• Review evaluation and validation evidence and coordinate safety performance indicator tracking for driverless Level 4 deployment.
• Support safety research, apply relevant standards and best practices, and potentially grow a technical team after initial milestones.

Requirements

• 5+ years of technical experience, including 3+ years working with robotics software.
• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Physics, or a related field.
• Working knowledge of systems engineering requirements, verification, and validation, with a deep understanding of robotic systems.
• Experience in a safety-critical industry involving complex robotic systems, such as robotics, automotive, aviation/aerospace, or medical devices.
• Hands-on experience applying ISO 21448 and familiarity with ISO 8800.
• Strong analytical communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships.

Nice to have

• Autonomous vehicle experience, ideally involving Level 4 deployment.
• Experience writing safety claims and system requirements for SAE Level 2, Level 3, or Level 4 systems.
• Experience with naturalistic driving data, human benchmarking analysis, and autonomous vehicle simulation for verification and validation.
• Technical and strategic management experience with a small team.
