Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA or Sunnyvale, CA, United States

Salary: $242,800–$357,000 USD annually, plus potential equity grants.

What you will do

• Set the technical direction for AI-first ranking, relevance, personalization, and decisioning systems across ads and promotions.
• Design and build machine learning systems using sequence modeling, deep learning, large language models, query understanding, and representation learning.
• Evaluate ML and LLM models through offline analysis, online experimentation, metric design, and A/B testing.
• Own the full model lifecycle from data analysis and development through production deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with product managers, data scientists, designers, engineering, analytics, and operations to deliver user-facing improvements.
• Translate emerging ML research into scalable production systems operating under strict latency, scale, and reliability constraints.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building, deploying, and scaling ML and AI models for large-scale, user-facing or data-intensive products.
• Proficiency with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor across the software development lifecycle.
• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Expertise in deep learning, LLMs, information retrieval, ranking and relevance, recommendation systems, NLP, or content understanding.
• Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or C++, with experience using PyTorch, TensorFlow, or XGBoost.
• Experience with feature engineering, iterative model development, offline and online evaluation, monitoring, and improvement.

Nice to have

• Experience deploying LLM-based systems, prompt engineering, RAG architectures, or generative recommendation systems.
• Experience with large-scale user and content personalization, retrieval, ranking, and relevance.
• Open-source contributions, publications, or applied research in ML, NLP, information retrieval, or related fields.
