TL;DR

Senior Python Developer (AI): Design and build the AI foundation of Home Assistant, including conversation APIs, LLM integrations, typed tool layers, in-product agents, and open agentic standards with an accent on local-first, private, and reliable AI systems. Focus on implementing production LLM features, integrating Model Context Protocol interfaces, building context-aware Assist capabilities, and creating safe agentic workflows for users and open-source contributors.

Location: Remote within Europe; candidates must currently be based in and eligible to work within Europe. The role requires at least three hours of workday overlap for team communication.

Approximate yearly total compensation: Netherlands — 92,000 EUR; UK — 90,500 GBP; Spain — 77,500 EUR; Portugal — 81,000 EUR. Compensation for other countries is discussed during the first interview.

What you will do

• Design and build conversation APIs, LLM integrations, typed tool layers, and AI foundations for Home Assistant.
• Create in-product agents that understand home configuration while keeping users in control of proposed actions.
• Connect Home Assistant to external AI systems through open standards such as the Model Context Protocol.
• Expand Assist with context, memory, documentation, configuration, diagnostics, and local or cloud model support.
• Build AI-powered workflows for issue triage, code review assistance, and contributor tooling.
• Review pull requests, investigate community issues, and contribute to architectural decisions.

Requirements

• 5+ years of Python backend development experience.
• 3+ years of experience with asyncio and threading.
• Production experience building and shipping LLM-powered Python features, including tool calling, agent loops, streaming, evaluation, and failure handling.
• Experience designing or implementing Model Context Protocol servers, clients, or comparable agent tool-calling interfaces.
• Experience with local, on-device inference such as Ollama or llama.cpp.
• Professional fluency in English and current European residency with eligibility to work in Europe are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with smart homes, automation, Home Assistant, or custom integrations.
• Open-source contribution experience and affinity with open-source development.
• Experience building agentic developer tooling or AI-assisted engineering workflows.
