Individual Consultancy to Design a Gender-Transformative Childcare Model

Location: Nairobi, Kenya; office-based with travel required. Contract duration: 9 months.

What you will do

• Conduct a literature review and contextual analysis of childcare systems, care work, and child wellbeing.
• Engage caregivers, adolescents, communities, government stakeholders, and other partners through participatory research and co-creation.
• Assess programme risks and develop appropriate child safeguarding and protection measures.
• Design a gender-transformative childcare model using feminist and gender frameworks, including the 5R model.
• Integrate childcare interventions with social protection, education, health, livelihoods, and gender equality programmes.
• Develop recommendations that support investment, financing, implementation, and potential scale-up.

Requirements

• At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in childcare, early childhood development, social protection, gender programming, child rights, public policy, or a related field.
• Advanced degree in Gender Studies, Social Policy, Development Studies, Child Development, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, evaluating, or strengthening childcare, parenting, family support, or community-based care programmes.
• Strong knowledge of childcare systems, the care economy, unpaid care work, nurturing care, and child wellbeing frameworks.
• Experience applying gender-transformative, disability-inclusive, and child rights-based approaches, including work with adolescents, adolescent mothers, and marginalized communities.
• English and Kiswahili are required.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with the Kenyan social protection system.
• Experience working in East Africa or comparable contexts.
• Experience with hirify.global, UN agencies, or similar organizations.
• Experience developing costing frameworks, investment cases, financing strategies, or scale-up roadmaps.

Hiring process
