Staff+ Software Engineer, Privacy (AI)

Location: Remote-friendly with required travel; based in San Francisco, Seattle, or New York City.

Annual salary: $405,000–$485,000 USD

What you will do

• Design and implement privacy-preserving architectures for large-scale AI training and inference systems.
• Build privacy infrastructure for data discovery, classification, access controls, audit logging, lifecycle management, and data lineage.
• Partner with research, product, and infrastructure teams to protect user data while maintaining model quality.
• Translate GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, and EU AI Act requirements into technical designs and automated compliance controls.
• Lead privacy reviews, threat modeling, risk assessments, and scalable mitigations for models and product features.
• Develop privacy engineering frameworks, analytics systems, and tooling that enable privacy-preserving features by default.

Requirements

• Production experience applying privacy engineering principles, including privacy by design, data minimization, and purpose limitation.
• Proficiency in Python, Go, or similar languages, with experience operating production systems at scale.
• Experience designing privacy infrastructure for systems with a large user base.
• Experience with data governance, classification, data lifecycle management, privacy reviews, threat modeling, or risk assessments.
• Understanding of privacy regulations and the ability to translate legal requirements into technical implementations.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or professional experience in a relevant field.

Nice to have

• Experience with differential privacy, homomorphic encryption, secure enclaves, or secure multi-party computation.
• Experience building privacy controls for machine learning or AI systems.
• Experience establishing a privacy engineering practice or serving as an early hire in a new function.
• Experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and large, complex multi-quarter projects.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience and 3+ years leading complex projects as a technical lead.
