Mid-Senior Data Scientist (Life Sciences)

Location: Hybrid work in Portugal, with office locations in Vila Nova de Gaia, Fundão, and Lisbon (Expo).

What you will do

• Design and govern biomedical data models, including source-to-canonical mapping, ontology alignment, schema versioning, changelogs, and impact assessments.
• Build schema-driven data pipelines in Python and SQL, conduct exploratory data analysis, and implement validation frameworks.
• Develop and enrich biomedical knowledge graphs using RDF, OWL, SPARQL, Neo4j, and GraphDB.
• Apply machine learning and Gen AI tools to extract insights from scientific data at scale.
• Deliver FAIR data products with persistent identifiers, provenance, and harmonisation across source systems.
• Align scientific, engineering, and product stakeholders through clear communication and structured documentation.

Requirements

• MSc or PhD in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Molecular or Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Genetics, or a related field.
• Experience with biomedical data modelling, harmonisation, ontology alignment, persistent identifiers, and provenance.
• Strong Python and SQL skills, including data pipeline development and exploratory data analysis.
• Applied data science or machine learning experience relevant to knowledge graphs or scientific data.
• Strong stakeholder management, communication, critical thinking, and prioritisation skills.
• Fluent Portuguese and English required.

Nice to have

• Experience in pharmaceutical or biotech organisations.
• Knowledge of data catalogue, metadata registry, or schema registry tools.
• Experience with ML model lifecycle, Gen AI tools, FAIR data products, schema governance, or LinkML.
• Strong knowledge of biomedical ontologies and controlled vocabularies such as Ensembl, UniProt, and Gene Ontology.
