TL;DR
Lead Structures Engineer – Special Programs (Aerospace): Designing and analyzing prototype airframe structures and systems from concept through testing with an accent on loads analysis, structural substantiation, and rapid prototyping. Focus on evaluating early-stage aerospace concepts, developing finite element and hand-calculation methods, and owning structural technical approaches for advanced defense programs.

Location: San Jose, California, United States. The role requires U.S. Person status under ITAR/EAR, eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance, and travel of up to 10%.

Salary: $138,200–$190,100 base pay per year.

What you will do

  • Lead structural design and analysis for prototype vehicles and systems, including airframe structures, loads, landing gear, and structural substantiation.
  • Support rapid prototyping from concept sketches through detailed design, analysis, and test support.
  • Own structural technical approaches, standards, and analysis methods within Special Programs.
  • Evaluate the technical feasibility of emerging concepts, RFPs, and mission requirements.
  • Develop technical documentation, trade studies, and analysis packages for design reviews and opportunity decisions.
  • Collaborate with program leads, engineering teams, and government stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering.
  • Experience with aerospace structural design and analysis, including airframe structures and loads analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of finite element analysis, hand-calculation methods, and relevant industry standards.
  • Experience across the development lifecycle from concept through prototype in a fast-paced environment.
  • 8–12 years of relevant engineering experience or equivalent rapid-prototyping or advanced-programs experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Person and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering.
  • Experience evaluating early-stage technical concepts and working as a cross-disciplinary engineering generalist.
